Although Lemos was born in Los Angeles, he was known during his fighting days by the nicknames "Plaza Mexican" and also as the "Mexican Tiger." Both his parents were from Mexico, mother Michaela from Guadalajara, Jalisco and father Feliciano from Michoacán.[2]
In his first attempt Richie won the World Featherweight Championship by upsetting Petey Scalzo by T.K.O. in the seventh round.[3][4]
On November 18, 1941 Lemos lost his Championship by a very disputed decision to Jackie Wilson.[5]
In 1989 Richie was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame.[6]
